陕北 绥德人，少年时代常随爷爷跑三边卖菜籽换粮食。在那荒原和黄沙中，一走就是好多天，漫漫长路，寂寞旷野，无以解闷，赶脚的人们就信口唱起信天游，歌声此起彼伏。时间一长，耳濡目染，治文学会了许多民歌。
抗战胜利后，李治文加入陕甘宁边区绥德分区业余剧团，参加了《夫妻识字》、《兄妹开荒》等剧目的演出。1952年加入陕北合唱团，曾受到马可、李焕之的指导。60年代初，遇人员精简回家务农。
李治文对民间音乐有着执着的追求和热爱，他拜访老艺人，收集民歌，组织辅导民间合唱团，在浩如烟海的民歌中探索，孜孜以求的不断提高自己的演唱技艺。他既有一定的艺术素养，又保持了陕北人民纯朴、豁达的性格，他的演唱厚朴、率直、韵味十足、脍炙人口，保持着浓郁的地方色彩。
